Today I joined CrossFit. See the "What is CrossFit?" tab if you aren't sure what CrossFit is and "How Do I Join?" for information on how to join in Yellowknife.
The following entries are going to be a recording of what I accomplished and how I felt in each session I will also have pictorial updates of myself from time to time. It's a way I can record what I am doing, stay motivated and share my experience.
First of all, why did I join? My main reason is my friend Karina. I've seen how she has become physically fit over the last few months by doing CrossFit in Calgary and it's so inspiring! She's happy, glowing and is doing things she never thought possible. Then CrossFit was introduced in Yellowknife and I was timid at first, but my friend Sarah tried it out and told me she was hooked. I went in the Martial Centre here in Yellowknife to talk to John and I was sold. It's easy...the first session is free and you'll get a sense of what's it's about.
I signed up for my initial session and told my world on Facebook what I was doing...that's when Trudy, Cherie and Colette decided to join me. What a great group and just enhanced my motivation by 200%.
Ok, so back to tonight and how I felt...
Tonight, I felt like I was back in high school and about to get a failing grade in gym class. I've skipped too many classes and now have fallen behind. I can't lift my own weight, but at least I tried. Once I realized that no one passes this initial test, I felt better. Once I had a goal in mind...I'm going to eventually lift my own weight (I've seen Karina do it), then I felt better about why I was there.
I also felt really happy to have people there I knew and felt good around. It wasn't boring like some gym routine, it was engaging, fun and very goal oriented.
So how did I do?
The first challenge was to grab a medicine ball and head outside. Here we were to give 80% in a run with the ball approximately 400 m. It was timed and I wore out in the first 300 m...need to pace myself.
Next, we tried some dips. This was unsuccessful for me, but that's ok because I tried...I'll get it eventually.
Push ups - we weren't allowed to do a modified push up, so this I failed...the "worm" doesn't count apparently...at least I'll be well rehearsed for the dance floor...haha
Squats, I have to say are my favorite...once getting the correct form. I did 56 standing squats in 2 mins.
Sit ups - not so bad, Colette was standing on my toes, which made it a lot easier. I did 32 in 2 mins.
Chin ups - Not this time...close though.
Right now I'm a size 16
My goal is to lift my own weight, which will hopefully be at least 50 lbs less than what I weigh now.
The next session for us is Thursday...stay tuned.
